It is with great sadness that the passing of Burd Sisler has been announced, a man whose extraordinary life spanned generations and left an enduring mark on his country, his community, and his family. At the time of his passing, Burd was recognized as the oldest man in Canada, the world’s sixth oldest man, and Canada’s oldest surviving World War II veteran—an incredible testament to a life richly lived.
Burd Sisler proudly served his country during the Second World War, demonstrating courage and dedication in a time when the world needed it most. Following his military service, he continued his commitment to Canada through a distinguished 30-year career with the Canada Border Services Agency. His life reflected a deep sense of duty, resilience, and integrity.
Beyond his professional and military accomplishments, Burd was a devoted family man. He raised his family in Fort Erie and leaves behind a remarkable legacy through his five children, 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren. His presence in their lives was a source of strength, wisdom, and love that will be carried forward for generations.
Those who knew Burd personally remember him not only for his achievements but for his warmth, humor, and remarkable spirit. He formed meaningful friendships and inspired many, including those in public service. It was a great honor for one close friend to have received his nomination to run as MPP and, in return, to present Burd with the King Charles III Coronation Medal on his 110th birthday—a fitting tribute to a truly exceptional man.
As the community mourns his loss, gratitude is extended to his family and the dedicated staff at Garrison Place for their care and support. Visitation will be held at Benner Funeral Services, followed by a service to celebrate his life.
